This new book just released -We Hope for Better Things - by Erin Bartels is a moving story about race, love, and history including the 1967 Detroit riots plus episodes from the time of the Civil War all nicely woven together.  I got an advance edition of it at a writers' conference last fall, and liked every bit of it.
